The Sounds of Silence

Image may contain: sky, tree, outdoor and natureGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It’s bitter cold this morning and whether it snows or not today; it looks and feels like it should. My mornings haven’t been as quiet as I’m used to them being and I’ve missed the silence. It’s in the silence that the loudest messages can be heard and it’s in the silence when we usually hear from God. So, I struggled to find that quiet place and I determined to spend my morning the way I always do…just me and my God. He’s the Living Water and if I go even one day without some quiet time with Him; I thirst. Isn’t that the way it is for you too?

We live in an overstimulated world, and the thought of true “silence” is foreign to most people these days. Some people can’t stand leaving the noise of their lives behind even for a little time with the Living God, and some people can’t stand the silence at all. Some people are scared to be alone and they’re scared of the silence, and if there isn’t some noise or other people to drown out their silence; they’ll crawl under the bed to hide. Why are some people so afraid to be alone and so afraid of the silence? Hmm…sounds like it’s soul-searching time to me.

Some people “meet” with God with Christian music playing in the background the entire time, as if the Living God needs a little entertainment too. But if they ever want to hear from Him in the midst of the music, I guess He’ll have to compete with the artists or shout louder than the music plays. I doubt they’d hear His voice even then because their heart doesn’t care to hear it at all.
For some people, pulling up a Bible app on their smartphone is sufficient to check quiet time off-the-list, but all it takes is a single phone call or text message popping up on the smartphone and their lack of self control will kick-in while that “quiet time” with the Living God takes a back seat to life…for whatever it is that they “just can’t miss”. Carving out time to read on-the-go is one thing. Spending time in silence before the Throne of a Mighty God is another. I’m pretty sure that God doesn’t care if you’re a good multi-tasker…my God refuses to “compete” with anyone or anything else in your life at all, and if you don’t go silent FOR Him, He’ll give you a little Lesson on silence that will rattle your world in return.

At this stage in my life, I realize that I’m perceived as being “high maintenance” and “old fashioned”; but I don’t care what others think. When I spend time with a loved one or a friend or a client, they get my full attention and I expect theirs back. I have self control,so there is no fear of losing my attention to a smartphone, and I won’t be adding a source of noise to fill in where the conversation stops. When people speak to me I look deep into their eyes and I don’t merely hear their words; I listen to every single one. Most people feel good when they spend time with me because I make the rest of the world around me “go silent” just for them. So…my “high maintenance”, “old fashioned” self understands the sounds of silence and all of the Sweetness that comes when the rest of the world is tuned-out for “quality” time with the Living God, the Prince of Peace, the Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Great “I am”.

Mind Control….

Image may contain: sky, stripes and outdoorGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It’s still cold and it’s windy, but with the sun shining across this farm this morning it sure doesn’t appear to be that way at all. This simple little observation lead the way for my time with the Living God today. It served as a sweet reminder to me of how we see things with the eyes, with the heart and with the mind and one can easily “play tricks” on the other if we’re not careful. Isn’t that something you think about too?

Maintaining our joy and keeping our focus isn’t so easy to do sometimes when we have the eyes, the heart and the mind to contend with. It’s easy to look at this photograph with your eyes, and you can draw your own conclusions about the weather when you do, but it’s the mind that plays the most “tricks” of all. All it would take is a blindfold and a step outside onto the front porch and reality would soon set in as the mind reasons the circumstances. The mind is the source of the memories we have and the memories can easily be recalled with just one glimpse at an old photograph. The eyes see the image and the mind plays the tape, and before you know it; the heart overflows with joy. Following the heart should be easier than it is, but when the mind interjects with thoughts of it’s own; the heart can easily be shut down and every dream we have can be snuffed-out. I’ve known a few people in my life that experienced “love at first sight” and they married very soon after they first met. They managed to follow the heart before the mind could kick in and conjure up a million reasons and red flags about their love and they’ve now been married for decades. The mind plays the most “tricks” and the mind is the biggest dream killer of all…IF we let it be. Of all of the strategies and all of the self-help options that people seek out for ways to be happy; it all begins in the mind. We can’t necessarily control what the eyes see and we can’t control what the heart feels, but we have absolute control over the mind and our happiness and joy can be found in the thoughts that we allow ourselves to have.

People don’t come to their Faith based on what they see with the eyes, and most don’t come to their Faith by doing research and contemplating the possibilities. They come to their Faith when the heart engages and it overrides all of the excuses that the mind could conjure up for why being a child of the Living God is not a good idea. Once they come to their Faith they could easily have thoughts of defeat if they face their Faith with the mind instead of the Heart. “Why does God do this and why does God do that?”…none of the things the mind whirls around matter for even a split second when the Heart is engaged in the Living God. Love can blanket the worst of circumstances and love can bring forth the Trust. It’s when we rationalize our circumstances in our own minds and we paint a picture of what God is doing based on what we think He’s doing that we get ourselves in the biggest trouble. The mind is a beautiful thing and it’s not something to waste. But it’s the mind that plays the most “tricks” on us so it’s the mind that needs the most work. When thoughts of defeat or discouragement or insecurity or failure come to mind; those thoughts need to be kicked to the curb so that the heart can be the force to heal and to love and to succeed.

My mind tries to go into overdrive and my thoughts can be inclined to discourage me IF I let them. But when those thoughts whirl around in this old brain-of-mine I recognize those dream killers and I KNOW that these thoughts are not the thoughts that a Child of the Living God should have at all. So, I choose to think good things. I choose to think positive things. I choose to think victorious things. I choose to think loving things I choose to think successful things. More than anything else, I choose to be happy. Happiness IS a choice that all begins in the mind.

What Do You Want To Be Remembered For?

Image may contain: coffee cup and indoor

Good morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. The farm is getting prepped for the party my kids are hosting tomorrow in honor of my 60th birthday, and as I met with the Master this morning at daybreak I was moved with emotion as I considered my legacy. I’m on the back side of this wonderful life and it will be sooner rather than later that I’ll be standing before God. I won’t be bearing the burden of those wrong things I’ve done in my life because of the Price He paid for you and for me. But I WILL be accountable for all of those things that I had the opportunity to do In His Name but didn’t. I have a great Purpose in this life and a Legacy to leave behind that has Eternal significance, so I take great care to do my part to leave behind a Good One. Isn’t that the way you see your life too?

Sometimes when I ask people “what do you want to be remembered for?” the response I get surprises me. Some people avoid the question all together because they don’t want to consider leaving this life behind at all…but we all do eventually, and not thinking about it doesn’t change the outcome. Some people want to be remembered for worldly things like playing golf or being a sports fan. Unfortunately some people tie their significance to monetary things and they want to be remembered in dollars and cents. Some people want to be remembered as being a good mom or a good dad, and if they live long enough; a good grandma or a good grandpa. Some people make plans to be buried with something they love as if they can take it with them wherever they go. But luggage can’t be checked-in for the journey no matter where we end up. We’ll be traveling “light” when we pass from this life to the other Life, but it’s our Legacy that determines our direction and if we’re “empty handed” or not. The only legacy that matters at all is the Legacy that has Life…the Legacy that has Eternal significance…the Legacy that we’re remembered for and talked about for generations to come.

I see a BIG part of my Legacy lived out in my children, and I’m overwhelmed when I look at that part. My children weren’t my cute little possessions and they aren’t just something to brag about…although there’s a whole lot to be bragged about by this proud Mama. My children were my first “mission field” and they are living, breathing testimonies to the Legacy of my Faith that has Eternal Significance. God breathed life into them, and I breathed Truth as I set out to make an Eternal difference…and it shows. There will be plenty of hilarious stories to tell for years and years after I’m gone, because the legacy of humor has been passed along too. But what they’ll share with their children and their children’s children is the Legacy of my Faith. It’s fun to look at the next generation and to consider who they look like and what they’ll grow up to be or what kind of personality they’ll have. But the thing I’ll be looking out for the most is what kind of Heart they have, and if the Legacy of my Faith can be seen in them. That’s the only Legacy that really matters at all…the one with Eternal Significance.

I’m excited to celebrate my 60th birthday with my precious family and some friends, and it’s going to be lots of FUN. But I’m most excited to see the Legacy of my Faith in living color through my family and friends. My children are strong and kind and compassionate,(and funny) and they love their Heavenly Father more than they me…the way it should be for my Legacy to live on. My friends won’t be showing up for the food and drinks tomorrow, they’ll be showing up because my Life has touched their lives and the Legacy lives on…Eternally. There wouldn’t be a tombstone big enough to include stories about my life or humorous things that others might want to share; but it won’t take up much space at all make mention of my greatest Legacy…the Legacy of my Faith that will last for generations to come. Oh, how I long to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant” when I go Home. Until then, I’ll work on my Legacy every single day to be sure it has Life.

“A Little Sugar Goes a Long Way”

Image may contain: sky, tree, outdoor and natureGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It may be cold but it sure is beautiful, and as this new day came to life; it put the icing on the cake of my time with the Living God. It’s an honor to stand before the Throne of the Living God and it’s a privilege to place my requests before Him. It’s a comfort to know that He loves me more than anybody else does and that He’s always there for me. But before I get too carried away with all that I get from my time with Him; I praise Him. No matter what’s going on in my life or what’s NOT going on in my life; I praise Him. Rain or shine, happy or sad, smooth sailing or turmoil; I praise Him. Isn’t that the way it is for you too?

It’s so easy for us to get right to the-bottom-line with just about every person and every conceivable situation in life, and we see no need to offer praise. If the world doesn’t live up to our expectations, and if the results that we see don’t meet with our approval; we go straight for the jugular and we forget the good that exists in every person and every situation…if we’re willing to look for it. If we tell a child to clean their room and their efforts fall short of our expectations; we nix the praise for the parts they did get right, and go straight for the faults instead. If a clerk in the check-out line is rude or if they don’t handle our items the way we think they should, we rip them up for all the world to see and we forget about all of the good that exists in every person and every situation…if we look for it. I’m grateful for an earthly father that used to say “a little sugar goes a long way” and when it was time for my correction, he always began with a reminder of the good in me. I’m grateful for a Heavenly Father that never rebukes me without showing me the Good in me. I don’t think I could stand the pain of hearing about all of the wrong in me and all of my countless faults without “a little sugar”. So if WE want to hear about the good in us and we want to be given a little credit for who we are and for all the parts that we do get right; why would the God of the universe, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Bright Morning Star, the Prince of Peace, the Everlasting Father, and the Great “I am” ever be okay with us approaching Him with a list of all that He should be doing FOR us without it all beginning with Praise?

Everything we need to know about everything in life can be found on the pages of the Word of a Mighty God. We’re His children; and it shows. He gives us simple Instructions that anybody can understand, so there’s no excuse for not getting it right. We’re even given instructions on “how” to pray…and it begins with Praise…”Our Father which art in Heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”. When we read about what will take place when the End of Time comes and Christ returns for His church, we know that the Throne of our God is guarded on all sides and that 24 hours a day for all of Eternity the praise of those angel/guards is “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, Who was, Who is and Who is to Come”. I get goose-bumps just thinking about what Heaven will be like! So how is it possible to fail to praise Him in worthy fashion, and why don’t we Praise Him FIRST if we know that’s the way it’s “supposed” to be? It all comes down to the condition of the heart. It’s only when we experience Him (instead of just acknowledging Him) and we understand that He’s our everything, He’s our Creator, our Protector, our Provider and the Reason for Life. Once we get that part embedded in the Heart, we end up Praising Him a whole lot more than we EVER ask for His help.

“A little sugar goes a long way” and I’ll be generous with my heart and my compassion today no matter what comes my way…a Valuable Lesson from the Living God. The world I encounter today will see Christ in me as I Praise for the good that I see, instead of going in for the kill. I’ll be “doing unto others” the way I want I want to be dealt with myself… and I may not actually praise Him 24 hours a day like the Angels do; but I’ll be a close second.

How about you?

The Color of Faith

Image may contain: plant and flower

Good morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It’s cold and it’s overcast and there wasn’t much color to cling to at sunrise on the outside. As I sat in silence and I considered what the Master has for me on this new day, my attention went to this simple plant. While the birds and the squirrels are outside fighting to find their food, this plant will be nourished inside by me. Fighting for good things…righteous things…is always a GOOD thing. But when it comes to those things of God; so many people are unwilling to “fight” and they’re content to hide the “color” of their Faith inside and away from the world just like this poinsettia plant. Is that the way you see your life too?

It’s so easy to sit back in life and wait for somebody else to do something; especially when it comes to those things of the Faith. Just like this poinsettia plant, our Faith can be bold and beautiful when we’re inside in the warmth of our home; but it’s an entirely different story when we’re out in the world. There’s a battle going on in the world and it’s a battle that threatens all people of Faith. It’s not a time for wussies and it’s not a time to refuse to do Battle. Some people have been convinced that people of Faith are to be seen and not heard; but that’s sure not according to God. Some believe that we’re to live in peace no matter what and they refuse to take a stand even when comes down to defending those things of our Faith. But that’s not according to God either. Some people believe that we are prize-worthy if we just turn the other cheek and ignore the offense against us. But that advice was given by Christ in reference to how we are to forgive and NOT how we are to Live.

It’s bizarre how willing people are to stand up and be heard when it comes to defending one of their own. When a child is bullied in school, and he or she is mocked over and over again by their peers, moms and dads fight like Pit-bulls to defend their child. When innocent animals are needlessly harmed, plenty of people will stand-up and be heard about the injustices. Some people are willing to do jail time as they fight for environmental things that threaten our planet; while there are other groups that keep the fight going as they demand to be seen and heard and accepted for who and what they are no matter what. When people are passionate about what they’re “fighting” for; they’ll defend it to anybody, anyplace and any time…no matter what. It’s passion that drives the human heart and passion that gives us the strength and the stay-power. But when it comes to things of the Faith; most people remain silent and they cower down under the threat of “political correctness”. They hide the “color” of their Faith away from the world and they have been convinced that this is what God wants. The REAL problem is that they lack passion for the Living God, and because they lack passion; they refuse to speak-up or to proudly stand-up for all that He is…our only Hope…our Savior…our Redeemer. These people live out their Faith just like that poinsettia plant…bold and beautiful but hidden away from anything and everything outside of the home. How can God be honored in silence?

I’m always ready to do battle because I know who my enemy REALLY is, and I’m confident that I have what it takes to be Victorious every single time. I know that I infuriate my enemy… but that’s okay because He doesn’t scare me at all. I don’t need to insult people or to do them harm as I do battle. I just need to lean on the One who Protects me and I need to be willing to walk the walk AND talk the talk for my God. I don’t need to preach and I’m not called to judge, BUT I am Commanded to be be courageous and passionate and willing to Serve. ALL people of Faith have been Commanded to tell the world about our Amazing God of Hope and Redemption no matter what kind of adversity we face because of it. How is that possible if we remain silent and hidden away from the world? Nobody ever won a battle by doing nothing! I’m doing battle for my Faith today and every day, and I “take one for the Team” more often that most people can imagine.

Hoarding The Season For Pleasure

Image may contain: sky, tree, cloud, outdoor and nature

Good morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. I had the most important Meeting of my day inside in the warmth of my kitchen and I received my Direction from my Instruction Manual by lamplight. This time of year is filled with family and activities and it’s this time of year that my business stays busy as the year comes to a close. It’s this time of year that takes more focus on equipping myself for the Season, so it’s this time of year that I am sure to take the time for me and my God despite the madness. My focus won’t just be on the birth of baby Jesus and presents under the tree. My focus will be on the only Way, the only Truth and the only Life and I’ll be sharing Him far beyond the manger. Isn’t that the way you see the season too?

It’s so easy to hoard this time of year for our own pleasure if we aren’t careful. We get busy decorating our homes with a tree and some lights and a multitude of other things, as if there’s a contest that we hope to win, and somehow the gentle beauty of the season is lost in the shuffle. The 3 wise men may have found their way to the manger where Jesus was born by following a beautiful bright star, but I’m sure the rest of the sky wasn’t lit up in bright, flashing colors in celebration. We’ll shop until we drop for our loved ones and we’re inclined to spend money that we don’t have to make the family happy; as if the more we buy for them the sweeter the season will be. But the 3 wise men KNEW that they were headed to meet their Savior and they didn’t bring a U-Haul to shower the King of all Kings with gifts. We’ll see a whole lot more of Santa than we will about Jesus in and out of our homes, and somehow the legend of a mysterious guy in the North Pole bearing gifts has out-shadowed the greatest Gift of all and the reason we celebrate this time of year in the first place. We’ll cook and we’ll bake and we’ll have more treats than any human could possibly consume while countless others will spend the season alone and hungry. Yes, we definitely heard this time of year for our own pleasure. I just wonder how that feels to the One who was born to die for you and for me?

I’m not legalistic and I KNOW how to have fun. I don’t believe for one-second that Christians are supposed to be broke and miserable. I’m filled with Joy for my King every day of the year, and when I celebrate Christmas with my family; it will be obvious that the day is all about Him and not about us. I’ll have a Christmas tree and I’ll put out a few decorations in my home. I’ll be busy making most of the gifts for my family and a few of my friends so that I can share a piece of my heart with them that somehow goes beyond pulling out a credit card. You won’t even find a HINT of that mysterious guy named “Santa” because we’ll be WAY too busy celebrating the birth of our Savior and giving thanks to the King of all Kings…our Prince of Peace.. our Wonderful Counselor and Almighty God for ALL that we are and ALL that we have and for the Hope that He brought to the world when He was born in that manger so long ago. I’ll have a lot of fun with my family (and a stray or two as the Lord sees fit) and this old farmhouse will rattle with laughter and love. We’ll exchange gifts and we’ll eat too much food while we give our time, our attention AND our Honor to the REAL reason for this season. I’ve got a feeling that the One who was born to die for me and for you likes it that way.

Are You on the Leadership Team?

Image may contain: sky and outdoorGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It’s a little too cold for even the bravest to sit outside this morning, so I met with the Living God with a hot cup of coffee in the dining room to enjoy the view from my usual spot. We did a little business on my heart and my thoughts this morning, and I was set Straight by Words from my Instruction Manual. It’s not always easy getting “set straight” by the Living God, but if I want to be on His Leadership Team, then it’s a big part of the Journey. He’s the best Life Coach anybody could ever have. Sometimes He humbles me with Truth, and sometimes He highlights my flaws and sometimes He gives me Marching Orders…and it’s almost always painful when He does. But His Word says “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths”; so acknowledge Him I do…in my Life, in my family and in my work. Isn’t that the way you live your life too?

It’s not an easy Journey to be bold in your Faith; especially in the workplace. But being a Christian isn’t what I do; it’s WHO I AM, and I know that as long as I “acknowledge Him” in all that I do, then I’m going to take a few hits here and there because of it. I’m on His Leadership Team, and it’s no place for wussies. When you’re on the Leadership Team you show up, you speak up and step up…with no fear of the consequences you face because of it. Sometimes people suggest that I set my Faith aside for a more “appropriate” time…but that’s not what God expects of those of us on His Leadership Team. When Jesus called for His disciples, they were working men. They didn’t go into the missionary program and they didn’t stop working. Most of them had their own business just like I do, and their business was “mobile” just like mine is. So the disciples took took their Faith on the road and the message of Salvation was shared with their world every single day…in and out of work. The disciples were the first Leadership Team and they are the example for me to follow. So, my workplace has a Purpose for me beyond just making a living. My workplace gets the greatest chunk of my time every day, so it’s the biggest Platform for my Faith…in more ways than one. We’re supposed to be a Light in this dark world, and you sure can’t shine the Light if you turn it off at will just so that you can be pleasing to the world around you. His Word says “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved”, so I’m not surprised to take some hits here and there. Nobody would ever “hate” me if I refused to speak up. Speaking up comes with a big price and a Bigger Reward.

Being bold in our Faith doesn’t mean that we’re harsh or that we’re obnoxious. It doesn’t mean that we point fingers and issue threats to those who don’t Believe. It doesn’t mean that we take a cavalier attitude or that we think we’re better than other people. It means that we understand our Job Description and we understand what’s expected of us if we’re going to be on the Leadership Team. It means that we walk the walk AND we talk the talk. It means that we extend Supernatural compassion and love that can take you’re breath away. It means that we wear our Joy on our sleeves and we’re ALWAYS happy to give Credit where Credit is due. We’re as bold and courageous as a lion, but we’re as gentle as a lamb. The recruiting efforts for the Leadership Team are very similar to the way it is in my business. I share what I know with excitement and I understand that not everybody wants to follow me. I don’t give up on the ones that reject what I Share, but I “kick the dust off my feet” and I keep moving when they reject me…because these are the Instructions for the Leadership Team. If I’m going to reach the masses as part of the Leadership Team for Christ (and the leadership team for my business) then I can’t slow down and try to convince people who are already set on rejecting my Message. I keep moving just like I’m Instructed to do…and if I’m willing to “acknowledge him” in all my ways, then He’s definitely going to “direct my path”…especially in my workplace.

I’m part of the most significant Leadership Team in the history of the world and it’s an honor to be a part of it. I’m teachable. I’m obedient. I’m bold and I’m courageous and I’m as gentle as a lamb. If you encounter me today you’ll definitely see and hear about my Faith…with compassion and joy that will leave you breathless, and if you reject me; I’ll just “kick the dust off my feet” and I’ll keep moving… because that’s what a Leader does.

Prioritizing for the King!

Image may contain: people sitting and guitarGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. I met with the Master in front of a warm fire this morning, and my time with Him was all about praise. I have a ton of things to take before the Throne of my God every day, and I have lots of needs to pray for. But today, all my heart could do was praise Him for all that He is and all that He does for me. I know that God doesn’t care about my voice or my lame attempt to play this guitar; He cares about my heart instead. I can’t help but to wonder if it makes God smile when we meet with Him with praise in our hearts without an agenda or a list of things we want from Him. Don’t you think about things like this too?

I understand the need for there to be order in the churches especially with so many demanding it. After all, if you quit worrying about pleasing the people; the people quit coming. Church is just part of the Sunday schedule for lots of people and they want to know what time they’ll be set free. If the service takes a little longer than “usual”; the church staff will definitely hear about it. Everything is timed just right…time for 3 or 4 songs…time for a few announcements… time for an offering or for communion… and finally, time for the Pastor to speak. Services today are fine-tuned and well-oiled and most of them run like clockwork. But I wonder what would happen in the orderly church if God showed Himself there one Sunday? Would He be told that He needs to be on the schedule if He wants to speak? How many people would be tapping their feet or looking at their watches impatiently as the service went into overtime? How many people would complain as the Praise songs seemed to have no end? How many people would be more concerned about the pot roast in the oven or the long lines in the restaurants over a little time with the Living God? When God shows up schedules have no significance, and when God shows up there is no longer “order”. How many people are a lot more concerned about “order” than they are about seeking His face? How many people actually long for Him to show up at all? My guess is that most people would prefer a scheduled visit than an impromptu visit by the King. Sad but true.

The “order” of my time with the Living God was altered this morning, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It didn’t matter what I “usually” do or how I “normally” spend my time with Him. What mattered the most is that I had a heart full of love for my God this morning, and I wasn’t looking to Him to do anything for me. I praised Him. I sang to Him. I told Him how much I love Him. I gave Him thanks upon thanks for all that He is and for good He is to me. And God showed up this morning.

Is God on your schedule or are you on His?

“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me” – Psalm 13:5-6

Dominion or Worship?

Image may contain: sky, tree, cloud, plant, outdoor and natureGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. I met with the Living God as He woke up the world, and it would be humanly impossible not to be moved by His Majesty on a morning like this one. Lots of people give lots of credit to lots of other things besides a Mighty God for what they see; as if they can easily explain away the universe. But if they look closely at the world around them with a set of eyes eager to take it all in; they’d see that it can’t be explained away as “nature” or “the universe” or something brought forth by some “cosmic boom” or by anything other than the Hand of an Amazing Creator. There’s a big difference between worshiping the planet and worshiping the One who Created the planet, and when it comes to God; that’s a Deal Breaker.

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing more precious to God than His people. Not trees and not bees, Not dogs or cats or horses…but His People. If any of these things have a soul and a shot at Eternity the way people do; He would have said so. Man has “dominion” over the earth and there is no doubt that God wants us to take pleasure in it all…it’s a beautiful thing to commune with nature. He wants us to be good stewards over our world and He wants us to give Him the Praise and the Glory for it all. God says “I’m a jealous God” and that “thou shalt have no other gods before me”. He wants to be front and center…He wants to be first and foremost…and He wants to be given the glory for ALL of Creation! That’s pretty clear from where I’m sitting. But we live in a world that sometimes goes a giant step beyond just being good stewards, and it teeters on having other gods before Him instead. There’s a big difference between worshiping nature and worshiping the One who Created it….a precious Gift from God for man to enjoy…and it all began in the Garden of Eden.

It’s so easy to accuse someone of allowing “money to be their god” when their time and attention is all given to getting more of what they love. But what happens when it comes down to other things that get our time and our attention more than anyone or anything else…including God? What happens when it’s our pets that we’d lay our own lives down for and we put their needs above everything and everyone one else? What happens when our disaster relief efforts are focused more on providing for the needs of the homeless pets than providing for the needs of His homeless People? How is it possible that we issue warnings about leaving pets outside on a cold winter’s night, but there are no warnings about the homeless people that often freeze to death on our streets? How can it be that people go to jail for hurting a dog or a cat, but people walk free for murdering their babies? How is it possible that parents can abuse their own children year after year and never lose custody, but when someone abuses a dog, all bets are off? How is it possible that famous athletes can beat their wives or their girlfriends like savage beasts, and yet the “show” still goes on; but if they strike a dog or treat them with cruelty, they’re off the field, off the payroll and inside the jail? How is it possible for us to put forth so much effort to find loving homes for dogs and cats while so many children rot in foster care longing for the same thing?

I saw the Master’s Hand this morning in the tree in this photo, in the fields around me, in the deer, the birds, the cows and even the cat that I’ve somehow semi-permanently adopted, and I love them all. I understand that I am to have dominion over all of them and I’ll treat them with respect that ALL of His Creation is worthy of. But God’s people will always be my biggest priority and their Destiny my biggest Mission. People Created with a Plan and a Purpose in mind and People He died for.

How about you?

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these BROTHERS and SISTERS of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:35-40

What Matters the Most

Image may contain: grass, tree, outdoor and natureGood morning, world. Things are looking pretty good from the front porch of my farm in Virginia today. It’s the calm after the storm of the Thanksgiving celebration, and this morning I’ve been savoring the memories of one more year of celebration with my loved ones and friends. Only half of my tribe made it to the farm for Thanksgiving this year, but they’ll be in town soon enough for a different kind of celebration and I’m counting the days until we’re all together again. As surely as the seasons around me change, the seasons of life do too, and no amount of wishing can change the course. So I roll-with-the-flow of my life and I give thanks through it all. Isn’t that the way you look at life too?

It would be so easy to look around the holiday table and to focus more on who’s NOT there than who IS there. Sometimes death leaves an empty seat and sometimes conflict takes priority over peace. Sometimes people move far away and sometimes they opt for different plans at a different table. But no matter how many empty seats there may be at the table, it’s the fullness in the heart that matters most of all. Though I miss my loved ones that have passed on from this life, I don’t light a candle or hold a memorial service in their honor. Instead I keep them alive in my heart and I speak of them often and there is always a great story about them that comes to mind to share…holidays or not. They haven’t “left” us…they’ve moved on to the Biggest part of our Purpose and I know that one day we’ll have the greatest Celebration of all.

It would be so easy to focus more on the conflicts that can keep us apart than all of the reasons we have to be together; but conflict is often the cause for of a lot of empty seats around the table. Sometimes separation is in order for good reason, but most of the time it’s a hard heart and a refusal to forgive that drives one out of the seat at the table and it’s a selfish heart that refuses to make its peace. There are plenty of people worthy of an Academy Award that can somehow set aside their battles just for the sake of the festivities, and you’d never know what’s working behind the scenes just by what you see played out at the table. Image is more important to them than genuine peace and they can fool themselves through a holiday anytime for the sake of what things “look like” to others. On the other hand, lots of people put way too much emphasis on gathering together “for the holidays” as if joining together just for the holidays paints a picture of relationship and love. But gathering together JUST for the sake of a holiday celebration is nothing more than food and drink if the relationship isn’t there all year long too. It’s the fullness of the heart that matters the most and it’s working to have a healthy family and healthy relationships all year long that lead to the fullest tables.

My table may not have been as full as it usually is, but the fullness of heart fills up the empty feeling. There is peace in my family because we wouldn’t have it any other way. If conflict arises; it is handled in Christ-like fashion and forgiveness flows through our veins. We may not be forever joined-at-the-hip but our hearts are, and it’s the fullness of the heart that matters the most.

How about you?
